Born and raised in Palmerston North and educated through Māori medium with Kōhanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa (Te Kura Kaupapa o Mana Tamariki), and Wharekura. She is a qualified translator of Te Reo, a former TV presenter and was also a kaiako at her old Kura kaupapa and wharekura, and holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Education. Hinurewa is a graduate of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo and is a renowned linguist who has worked tirelessly to revitalise and promote te reo Māori locally, nationally and internationally.
Hinurewa is part of Kura Whakarauora, who travels around Aotearoa helping whānau, iwi, and hapū with language planning to help revitalise te reo. Hinurewa’s current role is at Māori TV as the Director of Reo.
