Born in Whakatāne, raised attending a Kura Kaupapa Māori, and currently residing in West Tāmaki-makau-rau, Oriini Kaipara is an award-winning bilingual Māori broadcaster, journalist, translator, and interpreter of te reo Māori and English. With a career spanning more than two decades, Oriini is well-respected for her approach to issues significant to Māori, contributing to shaping a positive bicultural New Zealand society.
After completing studies at the South Seas Film & Television School in 2002, she began her career as a newsreader for Mai FM. In 2004, Oriini joined TVNZ’s Waka Huia as a reporter and later became the Director of the program. Notably, in 2019, she made history as the first person with a moko kauae to present mainstream news on television in Aotearoa.
In December 2023, Kaipara announced her departure from TV3 to assume the role of Māori cultural lead for the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
