Te Ahu, one of 14 siblings, was born at Waiokura Pā near Manaia in Taranaki and raised in the family homestead. He is among the first of several generations to return to Te Tauihu o te Waka-a-Maui after his tūpuna left Whakapuaka over a century ago to return to Taranaki. Throughout his engagement in te ao Māori, Te Ahu has served as a Māori Adviser for Massey University and Victoria University. Since relocating to Motueka over four years ago, he currently holds the role of Te Pouhāpai Tikanga for Ngāti Tama ki Te Waipounamu and serves as the Tokomaru representative for Te Pae Motuhake ki Te Tai Tonga for Te Mātāwai.
